The volume of water on earth – all of our blue planet – is limited.
Of the roughly 1,386 million cubic kilometres of water available on earth, almost all is salt water in oceans, seas, salt lakes and aquifers below the oceans. Of the 2.5 % of fresh water, more than two thirds is contained in glaciers, snow, ice and permafrost surfaces. Only 0.8 % of global water bodies is usable drinking water in the form of surface water such as rivers, lakes and ground water.
